Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about tax filing, IRS representation, ITIN applications, and our services.
General
What is an Enrolled Agent (EA)?
An Enrolled Agent is a federally licensed tax professional authorized by the U.S. Department of the Treasury. EAs have unlimited practice rights to represent taxpayers before the IRS for audits, collections, and appeals — the same rights as attorneys and CPAs, but with a exclusive focus on taxation.
What is the difference between an EA and a CPA?
Both can prepare taxes and represent clients before the IRS. However, an Enrolled Agent specializes exclusively in tax matters and is licensed at the federal level, while a CPA is licensed at the state level and may cover a broader range of accounting services. For tax-specific needs — especially IRS representation — an EA is often the ideal choice.
Who do you serve?
We serve individuals, families, small businesses, self-employed professionals, non-resident aliens, international students, and entrepreneurs across the U.S. and globally.
Do you offer remote services?
Yes. We work with clients nationwide and internationally. Most services can be completed entirely online — securely sharing documents, signing electronically, and meeting via video call.
Tax Filing
What types of tax returns do you prepare?
We prepare federal and state individual returns (Form 1040), business returns (Forms 1120, 1120-S, 1065), nonresident returns (Form 1040-NR), and more. We handle simple W-2 filers as well as complex multi-state, self-employed, rental property, and investment situations.
When is the tax filing deadline?
For most individuals, the federal tax deadline is April 15. If it falls on a weekend or holiday, the deadline shifts to the next business day. Extensions are available, giving you until October 15 — but any taxes owed are still due by April 15 to avoid penalties.
What happens if I miss the tax deadline?
Filing late without an extension can result in a failure-to-file penalty (5% of unpaid taxes per month, up to 25%). If you owe taxes and miss the deadline, interest and penalties begin accruing immediately. We can help you file as quickly as possible and explore penalty abatement options if applicable.
Can you help if I haven't filed taxes in several years?
Yes. We regularly help clients get back into compliance by preparing and filing multiple years of unfiled returns. The IRS requires most individuals to file returns for the past 6 years to be considered in good standing.
Do I need to file a U.S. tax return if I live abroad?
U.S. citizens and permanent residents are generally required to file U.S. tax returns regardless of where they live or where their income is earned. Certain exclusions and credits may apply to reduce your U.S. tax liability. We specialize in international and expat tax situations.
ITIN & Nonresident
What is an ITIN and who needs one?
An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a tax processing number issued by the IRS to individuals who are not eligible for a Social Security Number but have a U.S. tax obligation. This includes nonresident aliens, foreign nationals, and their dependents or spouses.
What is a Certifying Acceptance Agent (CAA)?
A CAA is an individual or entity authorized by the IRS to assist applicants in completing the ITIN application process. As a CAA, we can verify your identity documents and certify copies — so you do not need to mail your original passport to the IRS.
How long does it take to get an ITIN?
The IRS typically issues ITINs within 7–11 weeks. During peak filing season (January–April), it may take longer. We help ensure your application is complete and accurate to avoid delays.
IRS Issues & Resolution
I received an IRS notice — what should I do?
Do not ignore it. IRS notices have deadlines and ignoring them can escalate the issue. Contact us and we will review the notice, explain what it means, and respond on your behalf. As an Enrolled Agent, we are authorized to represent you directly before the IRS.
Can you represent me in an IRS audit?
Yes. As an IRS-licensed Enrolled Agent, we have unlimited rights to represent taxpayers before the IRS in all matters including audits, appeals, and collections. You do not have to deal with the IRS alone.
What if I owe more than I can pay?
There are several options depending on your situation — including installment agreements, an Offer in Compromise (settling for less than owed), Currently Not Collectible status, or penalty abatement. We will review your case and recommend the best resolution strategy.
Business Services
Can you help me start a business?
Yes. We assist with entity selection (LLC, S-Corp, C-Corp, Partnership), state registration, EIN application, and initial tax setup. Choosing the right structure from the start can save you significant taxes down the road.
What is an S Corporation election and should I consider it?
An S Corporation election (Form 2553) allows eligible LLCs and corporations to be taxed as pass-through entities, potentially saving self-employed individuals on self-employment taxes. Whether it makes sense depends on your net income level and situation — we can run the numbers for you.
Do you offer bookkeeping and payroll services?
Yes. We provide ongoing bookkeeping, payroll processing, and payroll tax filings so your records stay clean and your employees are paid accurately and on time.
